How We Farm

Simply put, we take great care to grow delicious and healthful vegetables without chemicals. The tricky part is how we actually do this.

Fertility

Healthy soils grow strong and productive plants. We keep our soils healthy by planting green manures, also called cover crops, that add important nutrients and organic matter. Legumes like hairy vetch pull nitrogen out of the air and deposit it in the ground where our plants can use it.

Insects

If you plant a crop, insect pests will find it. We fool insects by planting different crops in different places every year in a practice called crop rotation. Some insect pests fly to their host plants and we can keep them out by covering our crops in a floating row cover of spun polyester that lets sunlight in. Other crops that need pollination by bees cannot be covered so we spray these with natural clay that irritates the insects.

Weeds

Weeds steal nutrients and sunlight from our crops so we have developed several methods to keep them under control. We use cultivators on our tractors that act like big hoes to cut weeds between our rows. We also use hand hoes and hand weed where necessary. We use plastic mulch and straw mulch in some of our crops heat loving and vining crops.

Farming without chemicals takes a lot of planning and work, but the result is worth all of the effort!
